Regular Rice Is NOT The Same As Instant Rice

For long term food storage you want use regular rice not instant.  Additionally, you do not want to use brown rice. These types of rice will not last long in food storage.  Regular white, Basmati and Jasmine are all good options.  However, they do not cook the same are instant rice.

How to cook rice:

1 1/2 cups water to 1 cup basmati rice

or

1 1/4 cups water to 1 cup Jasmine Rice

Step 1: Put rice and water in a pot and bring to a quick boil. Reduce heat and simmer with cover on for 12 mins (once lid is on keep it on for the full 12 mins).

Step 2: Turn the heat off. Leave lid on and let sit for 10 more minutes. (Do not take the lid off for the full 10 mins.)

Step 3:  Use a spatula to fluff the rice.

How to revive dry beans out of long term food storage

Dry beans are a wonderful food to have for long term food storage.  They have a lot of protein and they will last for years.  Some food preppers have said that after opening up their beans that were packed away properly for many years, they found the beans didn't hydrate as well as expected. There is a simple solution if this happens. Just add baking soda to the water when you soak them over night.

Egg Substitute

Did you know you can use Flax Seed in place of an egg?

One tablespoon flax seed = 1 egg

For long term food storage: Purchase whole flax seeds.  Store them in a mylar bag with an oxygen absorber.  Place in a food grade bucket with a silica pack. Store in a cool dry place.

Depending on the recipe or what you are using an egg for, you can just add a tablespoon of ground flax seed to a recipe in place of an egg or you can cook the flax seed down and create a gel to replace the egg.

Here is a great video showing how to cook flaxseeds and water to create an egg substitute. You can make it and freeze it in advance.

 Homemade powdered sugar is simple!

Ingredients:

Sugar

Put 1 cup of sugar in a blender.  Mix well, scrape the sides and mix again.

Note: If you are not going to use it right away just add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch or tapioca starch per cup of sugar in the blender.

Homemade Brown Sugar

Homemade Brown Sugar is so easy!

1 Cup Sugar

Mix both ingredients up with a mixer. You can make darker or lighter brown sugar based on how much molasses  you add.

A Good Reason To Store Food

Update: June 8, 2022 Gas prices as of today have increased already to $4.89 per gallon.  We have already exceeded the Nov. 2024 projection.  As a result I believe it is safe to say that all the projections are very low.  Please take this information and use it wisely.  Be prepared for what is to come.  Just as Job prepared for the flood.  If you know that Lord you do not need to worry, however his word does warn us of the birth pains that we will experience in the end times.

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

A Few Food Ideas For Storage

Foods great for long term food storage:

Repackage into mylar bags with oxygen absorbers.  Place those bags in a 5 gallon food grade bucket with silica packs.

Rice
Pasta
Dehydrated potatoes
Dehydrated Prepackaged Soups (like frountier soups or cooke's tavern)
Dehydrated vegtables
Grain Kernals or berries (if you plan to mill your own flour)
Seasonings

Note: you can purchase these in bulk at wholesale food stores like Ridgeview Foods in Herndon Pa

If you want to store meat long term you can freeze it or pressure can it.

Canned Veggies, sauces, fruit are great easy items you can pick up at the grocery store. I recommend not purchasing the peal top lids since it is uncertain as to how well they will store long term.
